Rod's best-selling Expert One-on-One J2EE Design and Development (2002) was one of the most influential books ever published on J2EE. The sequel, J2EE without EJB (July 2004, with Juergen Hoeller), has proven almost equally significant, establishing a comprehensive vision for lightweight, post-EJB J2EE development.

Application developers at DeCare Systems Ireland encountered persistent technical problems until they adopted the Spring Framework for Java/J2EE development. The Cork-based software services provider, which is best known for its work on internet retailing projects, now wants to raise awareness of Spring in other organisations.
According to DeCare director of operations John Murphy, the frequent changes to the Java specification have long been a source of frustration for the company's developers. The Spring Framework reduces this complexity by using JavaBeans to simplify the configuration of new applications. The Cork firm adopted the methodology last year and found that it was particularly effective in a large-scale insurance information project in the US.
DeCare subsequently decided to standardise on the framework and on the complementary Hibernate technology for database integration. It also started to develop custom plug-ins for the framework. 'We have now got in line with what Spring was doing,' Murphy says.
The company, he adds, was introduced to Rod Johnson through the it@cork technical forum. A University of Sydney graduate who is now based in London, Johnson has championed the simplification of Java development. He advocates the combination of Spring with agile techniques such as breaking project groups into smaller teams.

Mr. Rod Johnson of Interface21 (www.interface21.com), the father of the Java Spring framework spoke for three hours about his work and its application to real application development scenarios. Once again proving the appetite for leading edge technical knowledge in the region, the audience of 150 people were extremely impressed with both the technology and Rod’s delivery.
