Details:Leveraging the Cloud for New Business Opportunities

As one of the hottest topics the IT domain currently, Cloud Computing in large remains an amorphous concept, with widely varying definitions - most aligned with the particular widget a given vendor is pushing. What everyone seems to be able to agree on is that a model where organizations have the option of running applications on infrastructure that is owned and managed by a third party and paying for that infrastructure in a variable, consumption based manner, is a model that's here to stay. That premise alone has potentially staggering implications in the ecosystem of customers and providers that exists today, with some models set for dramatic growth and others potentially facing the plight of the dinosaurs. In considering who the winners and losers might be, and where opportunities for innovation are emerging, we will examine:

The gap between the science and the art? - What is really moving to the cloud and what is retarding broader based adoption. What missing elements are needed? Are there steps along the way that represent opportunities?

Implications to the role of IT? - Long the thorn in the side of the CIO, Infrastructure may soon become a commodity - will IT finally become a business software only community - remember MIS? Where will all those the Infrastructure people go?

The shift from reseller to broker? - The Fortune 500 enterprises will continue to be visited by the direct sales of OEMs for years to come. Their branch offices and the Forgotten 5000, who for years have been sold to through the channel, may disappear into the Cloud in a matter of a few years. How will those channel businesses adapt from pushing iron and licenses, to being intermediaries and services brokers?
