it@cork Launches Innovation that Matters

it@cork, in association with Cork County Council and Barlogue Consultancy Services, has announced a new and exciting initiative called 'Innovation that Matters'.

The primary focus of the Innovation that Matters initiative is to identify, recognise and promote technology concepts, products and services emanating from companies in Cork and the wider Region.

“We need to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship to drive growth in the Irish economy. It is widely recognized that our economic recovery will be export-led, and with this in mind, it@cork and Cork County Council wish to support innovative concepts that will create new market opportunities for our SMEs and lead to employment growth. “Innovation that Matters” will serve as a showcase of technological innovation in Ireland, both within established companies and start-ups”, explains Denis Collins, Chairman, it@cork.

As sponsor of the “Innovation that Matters” initiative, Cork County Council is offering a €1000 cash prize as well as a further subvention (up to €1000) to participate in a Cork County Council IT trade mission to Chicago in early 2012 for the winner of “Innovation that Matters”. The Chicago trade mission is a unique opportunity to meet with decision makers, potential partners and future customers in the US and ideally will present the successful company with an opportunity to further develop their innovative idea.

“We are inviting applicants and members of it@cork to submit a 500 word summary outlining the innovation and emerging idea that is taking place within their organization, or that they have developed. The deadline for this initial submission is the 27th May 2011. Each of these submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee and a final shortlist will be drawn up. Each shortlisted submission will be extended and will receive coverage through traditional communication and emerging technology over the summer”, added Ian O’Flynn, Barlogue Consultancy Services.

The successful company, which will be announced in November 2011, will then have a number of months to prepare for the trade mission to Chicago and demonstrate that they are fully prepared to avail of this trade opportunity.

it@cork, a leading business organization representing the tech sector in Ireland, today announced details of its Technology in Business Conference. Taking place on Thursday, 5 May in Cork, this year’s event will focus on Growth through Innovation for Ireland.

The need to grow and enhance our indigenous ICT sector has never been more urgent. Through increased competitiveness, a global focus and a renewed spirit of entrepreneurship, the Irish ICT industry is primed for growth - through innovation. The opening keynote will be delivered by Mark Little, Broadcaster, Entrepreneur and Founder of Storyful, an online news service which will curate useful content from the noise of social media. For almost 20 years, he worked for RTE as presenter of the RTE current affairs programme, Prime Time.

The closing keynote will be delivered by Brian Caulfield, Entrepreneur, Venture Capitalist & Partner, DFJ Esprit. Brian was the 2007 recipient of the Irish Software Association’s “Technology Person of the Year”. In 2010 he also received the Halo Business Angel Networks “Business Angel of the Year” award.

Munster’s Tech Leaders Revealed at Prestigious Ceremony

160 people packed the Vertigo Lounge in County Hall in Cork last night 18/11/2010, to hear the winners of the 2010 it@cork Leaders Awards. The awards were set up to recognise Leaders in Technology and Business Innovation in Munster. The event not only provided an opportunity for the tech community to recognise their peers who are driving success in the area, they also provided a platform for technology business leaders to meet in a relaxed celebratory atmosphere.

‘This is a unique event for tech companies’ explains Denis Collins, Global Sales Executive, IBM and Chair of it@cork Board of Directors. ‘This is a unique event for the ICT industry and clearly demonstrates that Ireland Inc is open for business, driving global thought leadership, collaboration and value to the marketplace. This is just the start of further emergence onto the global stage, our IT industry is alive and well and will continue to be an integral part of growth for Ireland Inc ."

John Wall, CEO of GxP Systems & Chair of the 2010 organising committee adds’ "We received over 100 nominations across seven categories and the standard was fantastic. The number of good projects with great people and strong aspirations should give us confidence that the future of the tech sector in Munster is in good shape."

The excellence in education award was the first to be presented and the winner was Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, Carrigtwohill. William Oppermann, CEO, MPSTOR and chair of the Excellence in Education Judging panel explained: “The George Boole School Computer Laboratory Project was developed through collaboration between Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, its Parents' Association and Department of Computer Science at UCC (Dr. Barry O'Sullivan). A 25 seat computer laboratory was installed along with 2-4 in-class computers in each classroom. Child safe access to broadband is available at each computer bringing the full educational benefits of the internet and IT to every child's fingertips. Teachers can monitor the use of each computer through a class management system. All software in this programme is free and open-source, available for download from the internet. IT is now in use throughout each subject on the curriculum in all classes as pupils and teachers have immediate access to websites, webcam links, educational games, word processing programmes, extra teaching resources, modern languages programmes etc. Presently the school is acquiring extra digital whiteboards so that all classrooms will be equipped with this resource and this year we will be running some IT courses for parents. The project has become a very positive focal point for the entire school community”

The winner of the Green Technology Award was ManageCO2. Tim Murphy, CEO, Strencom and chair of the Green Technology Judging panel explains why they won. “The winner of the 2010 Green Technology Award has shown great innovation in their application of reducing carbon footprint. They have truly demonstrated that they have the potential to have a global impact on reducing energy consumption through the application of their "software as a service" model in large multi-site organisations, and have already done so in many large companies to date. While all three finalists showed great innovation and initiative in their projects, the judges felt that this company stood out, and the decision was a unanimous one. The initial concept took over 2 months of research and preparation, and that was just to prove out that the idea was worth pursuing. The SaaS (Software as a Service) model used by ManageCO2 allows them to rapidly deploy their solution to multi-site organisations, across multiple jurisdictions and accurately measure, report and reduce their carbon footprint, and do all this in real time. It can be integrated into existing systems (such as ERP), or can work as a stand-alone service, and almost single-handedly can help a company meet its compliance and regulatory requirements. This is definitely a company to watch for the future”

McAfee won the Sustained Excellence Award. Ray O’Connor, Regional Manager, IDA Ireland and Chair of the Sustained Excellence Judging panel said: “Based on the judge’s assessment of employment growth, innovation, use of IT and contribution to the regional economy, the judges selected McAfee as the overall winner for the Sustained Excellence Award for 2010. McAfee, Inc., is the world's largest dedicated security technology company offering a comprehensive set of security solutions. Over the years, the company has continued to grow its presence in Cork with added functions beyond its original mandate and now employs 278 positions as McAfee’s European Headquarters. Today the functions include Research & development, Localisation, Finance, Operations, Inside sales and Logistics. “There were many worthy nominations for the Sustained Excellence Award, however McAfee was selected as the winner for 2010 as the company has demonstrated its sustained commitment to the region in relocating to a larger office facility, adding over 100 staff over the past 12 months and growing the range of activities and functions serviced out of Cork”

Abtran/4C scooped this year’s Research & Innovation Project Award. Declan O’Mahony, CEO, Firecomms Ltd and chair of the Research & Innovation Judging panel said: "The judges were very impressed by the range of projects presented, both in the content and in the presentation of the candidates. The winner tackled a problem with significant business impact - the decision as to which customer calls to analyse for quality of service - and applied a highly innovative and scientific approach in creating a solution. Their new technology identifies calls likely to require further analysis and intervention whereas previously the call sampling method was essentially random. A phased project development promises to deliver further meaningful innovation and service improvement. Working closely with the local 3rd level research institute (UCC's 4C) shows how collaboration can be effected with real commercial gains."

Lincor Solutions won the High Growth Category Award. Marcus McCarthy, Business Development Director, Trimble Utilities Field Solutions and chair of the High Growth Judging panel said: “Overall in the high growth category the competition was very tough, any one of the shortlisted candidates, Lincor, Compliance and Risks and VoiceSage would have been a worthy winner. We chose Lincor as the winner of the category for several reasons, excellent growth through recent times, strategic vision, solid management and really ambitious growth targets in terms for the next few years.”

This year’s IT Dept Award went to the QUINN-Healthcare. Ruairi Roddy, CTO of TCH and chair of the IT Department judging panel said: “The shortlisted candidates were very impressive in their grasp of the key role of the IT Department in being an agent of change, of innovation and of control in their organisations; IT done right. Following our interview process, it was clear to us that from very large projects with considerable complexity carried out over extended periods, to relatively small projects with stratospheric returns on investment, the fundamentals of good governance and of careful project control as well as technical nous were present in all of the candidates. To those that did not win, we would like to specifically commend them as being within a hair's breadth of being selected. We wish them to know that any of them would be a worthy winner, and it was simply an exceptional consistency in innovation; in people, organisation and process change; in project management and in the auditing of the success criteria that lead us to conclude that the winner of the 2010 award for it@cork IT Department of the Year should be QUINN-Healthcare"

The High Potential Start-Up Award went to Goshido. Shemas Eivers, Avnet Client Solutions and chair of the High Potential Start-Up judging panel said: “ We chose Goshido because they have gained significant traction in the numbers of organisations already using their software and they have managed to attract equity investment in a relatively short time. They have a highly charged and dynamic management team Ger Hartnett steering the ship in his capacity as COO and serial entrepreneur Frank Hannigan focused on delivering sales while continuing to seek further investment and they did a really good sales presentation!”

Positive Outlook on Economic Future Revealed by it@cork IT Sentiment Survey

Key findings of it@cork IT Sentiment Survey:

52% of respondents think the Global Downturn is Over the Worst and 25% that it is Near to the End
83% of respondents think that the Technology sector will play a Significant Role in the Recovery of the Economy
40% of respondents plan to Recruit IT/Technical staff in the next 12 months
48% of respondents think the Opportunities for Growth in the IT Industry are Increasing and 46% Stable

In the run up to it@cork’s Technology in Business Conference on November 18 the network for IT professionals carried out a survey to establish what the current mood of the IT sector is.

The survey revealed an optimistic attitude towards the global downturn with 72% of respondents convinced that we are Over the Worst or Near the End of the downturn. 83% of respondents also believed that the technology sector had a significant role to play in the recovery of the economy.

Respondents identified the technology sector’s ability to enable other sectors to become more productive and cost effective as a key role in the recovery of the economy especially with the current emphasis on reducing costs and increasing competitiveness. Also identified were the areas of technology usage to support business decisions and processes; green and clean technology and the generation of innovative and new technologies in general.

48% of respondents thought that the Opportunities for Growth in the IT Industry were increasing with 46% thinking they were stable. This confidence was reflected in the 40% who planned to recruit IT or Technical staff in the next 12 months.

The key areas identified as having opportunities for growth were: green technology; cloud computing; virtualisation; mobile phone applications; data warehousing / data centres; and selling online.

The theme of this year’s conference is Recovery Through Technology. Liam Casey of PCH International, known as ‘Mr China’, will open the conference with ‘New Opportunities in the Global Economy’. Casey was one of the speakers at the recent Global Economic Forum in Farmleigh. This year’s Ernst & Young’s Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year, Mike Fitzgerald of Altobridge will discuss ‘How to Create an International Success from Ireland’. Other topics to be covered include: cloud computing; innovative products; competitiveness; and raising financial capital.

Winners to be revealed on October 22

Finalists in the seven categories of the it@cork Leaders Awards have been announced. The winners will be revealed on the night of October 22 at a ceremony in the Vertigo Lounge, Cork County Hall.

The Leaders Awards recognise leaders in Technology and Business Innovation across Munster and across all company sizes and stages. More than 100 nominations were received over the seven categories. Three finalists have been chosen in each category.

‘Mr. China’, Liam Casey to open 2009 event

Details of the 2009 it@cork Technology in Business Conference have been announced. The theme for this year’s event is Recovery Through Technology. Delegates will learn from key global success stories on how to exploit new technologies and pinpoint new opportunities in the global economy.

The opening keynote will be delivered by ‘Mr. China’, Liam Casey, CEO of PCH International, a Shenzhen China based supply chain management company focused on the consumer electronics, personal computers, medical devices and telecommunications industries.

Speaking recently at the Global Irish Economic Forum, Mr. Casey said ‘ There are huge opportunities out there for Irish companies. We just have to go out there and look for them. We have to play to our strengths and build the brands that deliver the products. That’s where the value and opportunities are’.

Nomination process opens for it@cork Leaders Awards

New categories announced in the it@cork Leaders Awards

The nomination process for the it@cork Leaders Awards opened today (24/8/09). The Awards are now in their third year and have become an integral part of the technology calendar. The awards recognise leading companies in the IT and Technology sectors as well as companies that use IT to business advantage. The awards are open to companies in Munster, either indigenous or subsidiaries, in seven categories.

Nominate the company you think deserves an award at www.itcork.ie. The deadline is September 25, with three finalists in each category announced in mid October. The category winners will be announced at the Leaders Awards Ceremony on October 22 in the Vertigo Lounge, Cork County Hall.

Previous winners know they benefitted from an increased awareness of their company’s work after winning a Leaders Award. James Fogarty of Cork County Council winner of the IT Department Award 2008 commented ‘Winning the award raised awareness and appreciation both internally and externally of the work we do to increase the efficiency of the services the Council provides’. Lena Ni Mhurchu of Pilz Ireland winner of the R&D Project Award 2008 added that ‘Winning helped raise the profile of Pilz Ireland in Cork - to have the product acknowledged by the software industry helped Pilz Ireland gain recognition within the worldwide Pilz group.’

New categories announced in the it@cork Leaders Awards

‘The Awards are going from strength to strength and with our new categories the Awards have developed into an event with the capacity to acknowledge leading companies in all phases of business, from start-up to maturity, as well as project teams.’ commented Alison Reilly of it@cork.

There are seven categories for the awards. The first three categories are aimed at IT and Technology companies specifically. They are:
•   High Potential Start-Up award - recognises a leading company in early stage business planning and execution;
•   High Growth Company award - recognises a leading established company driving forward in international markets;
•   Sustained Excellence award - recognises an established company with a record of consistent growth and profitability.

The next three categories are open to all companies. They are:
•   R&D Project award recognises a leading innovative technology research project within industry or third level college;
•   IT Department award recognises an IT department that can clearly demonstrate business benefit from IT project implementations;
•   Green Technology award recognises a company that has implemented or developed technology solutions to achieve reductions in energy use.

The last category is open to primary and secondary education providers.
•   Excellence in Education award - recognises the efforts of an individual, group or school to engage with technology for education purposes.

Huge potential for new Irish industries around iPhone

Cork and Apple connection as strong as ever

Thursday, July 8th, Cork : This week's it@cork iPhone Apps event re-established Ireland's strong connection with Apple by showing how building software to be installed on iPhones is a huge market. The event, with almost 90 people in attendance had three experienced speakers talk about the multiple possibilities for the iPhone. Apple's iPhone has now created a platform and distribution system allowing developers to build applications and games which can be purchased and downloaded on to the iPhone. So far over 1 billion applications and games have been downloaded on to iPhones.

Cork, always associated with Apple recently saw University College Cork become the first university in Ireland to become part of the iPhone University Developer Programme and plans to incorporate it into two of its courses. Speaking about the event and iPhone development, Catherine Wall, Manager of it@cork said "There is huge excitement and positivity around development for iPhones and our event this week showed that a good deal of companies want to build their own iPhone applications as well as build applications for others. The iPhone is one more technology market that we are confident Irish businesses can be a core part of."

The event was organized by it@cork , a member driven network for technology companies in Cork. Keith Davey, Marino Software kicked off the event speaking on the App Lifecycle. He explained to attendees how to develop their app, distribute it, get it into the App Store, follow up with promotion and track usage. He was followed by Des Traynor of Contrast, who covered the fundamental design choices that are made during the design of an iPhone application. Finally, Daniel Heffernan of Appschool.ie spoke on power of the iPhone and demonstrated how easy it is to use this power to create exciting and truly innovative applications that use the touchscreen and gyrometric interfaces to turn the iPhone into a sensing device.

Tom Moore has been elected as Chairperson of the it@cork Board. Tom is Director of InfraSee, an IT Service Management and SaaS Partnering Service and was previously an IT Director for Motorola. Tom has been on the it@cork steering committee for the last four years.

‘It’s a great honour to be given an opportunity to drive and steer it@cork through what is a challenging time for all of our members’ said Tom Moore. ‘I would like provide increased representation for it@cork members within business and ICT consultation groups and to help to develop partnerships between member companies’.

Also elected were Chris Murphy of EMC as Vice-Chair and Lucy McMullen of SOTA as Treasurer.

it@cork is a networking organisation for IT professionals in the Cork region. Although in existence for the last 11 years this not-for-profit only recently became a limited company. It is hoped that with legal status will come opportunities to collaborate with a wider variety of organisations and to act as a partner in European programmes that benefit members.

The organisation is member driven and represents the interests of ICT professions in the Cork region. it@cork now represents over 280 corporate members. Each year over 25 events are organised for members including training, seminars, networking events and an annual conference.

EMC Managing Director hosts visit from it@cork members

it@cork members visited the EMC plant in Ovens, Co. Cork on May 18th in the first of what will hopefully become a series of member company visits. Bob Savage Vice President Managing Director EMC Ireland welcomed over 50 people to the event. Bob had issued the invitation to it@cork members when he spoke at their Christmas networking event in Murphy’s brewery. He embraced the event as an opportunity to build relationships with the rest of the IT community in the area and to increase the profile of EMC locally. Although EMC is one of the biggest employers in Cork many people don’t know what they do.

John O'Callaghan the Director of the Executive Briefing Centre talked everyone through the huge range of products and services that EMC provides. While Chris Murphy Director of IT Operations for EMEA and APJ gave everyone an insight into how EMC organises its internal IT systems and some of the environmental and cost cutting measures they have recently implemented. Members were then given a comprehensive tour of the facilities. As Eóin Shanaghy of ES commented,’ this was a rare opportunity to see around the stunning facility’.

This was a member only event, not only giving members the opportunity to see inside one of the largest facilities in the area but to share ideas on the upcoming trends in IT and to expand their contacts. The next it@cork is open to members and non-members and is a Software Testing event in Association with SoftTest Ireland on June 18.
